Learn to Kitesurf

The Ocean2air Kitesurfing centre is located on one of the best beaches in KZN just North of Durban.  Owners Rob and Bruce were the pioneers of this sport and learnt the sport the hard way. We therefore understand how important it is to learn the right way and have developed a program that will not only teach you the basics but will give you the best opportunity to get you up and riding. What we have realised is that the first lesson, if taught right, can either make or break your kiting career. So if you want to get into this awesome sport make sure that your first step is the correct one and we will have you up and riding like we have done with so many kitesurfers.

Come and get into our program that we have refined into being one of the most comprehensive and easiest ways to learn this sport. Start with module 1 and 2  - we will supply everything you need to give it a try. This will give you an idea if you want to continue further without even having to buy any gear but our main aim here is to make sure that you use the right technique to fly the kite. Kitesurfing is like wake boarding but you are driving the boat at the same time – so if you can't drive the boat well you can't go properly on the board – it is that simple ... so we will teach you how to fly the kite first and once you have mastered that we will get into the boardwork.

Our instructors are all IKO certified and teach to the IKO standards, and have been teaching for the last 8 years, so you are getting the best instruction around ! We also use 1 way radios to communicate with our students during the lessons so that you get the most out of your lesson !

Lessons Module Breakdown

MODULE 1 (R 450 / 2 hrs)
We start with the theory - all the do's and don'ts.

Kite set-up: how to rig, launch and land your kite.

Safety - is a major part so you can understand how easy and safe kiting can be.

The main part of this lesson will then focus on the correct way to fly and control kites. This is our main emphasis as we have realised the importance of this. If you do not gettaught this from the beginning then you will make your learning curve a lot harder. We show you how to use your harness to it's fullest potential and where to fly your kite to ensure you don't hurt yourself.

MODULE 2 (R 450 / 1.5hrs)

We try do the 2 modules together and we will then do a 4 hour lesson for R900 (These modules are based on a minimum of 2 students per instructor)

It is better to go straight from module 1 into module 2 so that everything is fresh in your mind.

This Module deals with trying to maximise the power zones and where to fly the kite. We aim to try and get consistent power. This is also priming you to get into the water. We will deal with how to re-lauch and how to walk up wind with the kite in one hand.

We recommend coming for module 3 on your own equipment  to familiarize yourself  with your own equipment if you have purchased but  you can continue with the school equipment if you wish

MODULE 3 (R 450 / 1.5hrs)
Water work - body dragging - advanced.

We will start this lesson by giving you a quick re-cap of what you have already been taught (1/2). We now  use the water proof helmet radio so that we can communicate with you in the water - this really helps reduce the learning time. Then we will get you going in the water, teaching how to get pulled by the kite and how to water re-launch. We are looking for kite control to allow you to get direction in the water. Next we will start the one handed kite flying and then take this into advanced body dragging.

You should now be able to competently fly the kite and understand what you are doing. We now recommend spending time flying your own equipment and familiarizing yourself with how it all works.  You need to practice what we have taught you but if you need the instructor to spend more time with you before you venture out.

MODULE 4 (R450/1hr)

Board work - your kite flying needs to be at a certain level before you try the board (our instructor will advise if you are ready)

One on one lesson with one of our instructors which is designed to give you the basics to get you up and riding on the board. We will use the one way radio so that we can help you to understand quicker what you should be doing and to help you to get going on your own

If you are continuosly crashing the kite then we recommend going back one stage and spend a little more time body dragging to make sure that the basics are correct before trying the board again.
