Durban is situated on the East Coast of South Africa and enjoys a warm sub-tropical climate year-round with temperatures in the mid to low twenties even in winter. Known more as a great surfing destination, Durban offers some of the best kitesurfing locations in South Africa. All locations offer good surf conditions and very warm waters - so no need for a wetsuit as the sea temperature averages around 20 deg C.
The windy season for Durban runs from about August through to December but Durban has wind throughout the year. The prevailing wind is NNE (cross on). All of Durban's beaches are Shark Netted. While Durban offers excellent safe kitesurfing beaches the North and south coast offer epic un-crowded conditions with good point breaks that work in winds from NE through to SW.Be safe and be sure to use a Kite Leash ! Not using a kite board leash is a safe option in the surf but be sure you are comfortable with whatever solution you use. Remember to always speak to the locals and get a good idea on the conditions before going out. |
